Environmental Youth Group
The Environmental Youth Group (EYG) has started meeting regularly again at the Qagan Tayagungin Tribe Recreation Center during Boys and Girls Club. The Qagan Tayagungin Tribe’s Environmental Coordinator, Karis Porcincula, will hold EYG every other week on Friday at 3:30 PM. Environmental Youth Group is accommodated by the Qagan Tayagungin Tribe to provide the youth of Sand Point with an opportunity to participate in environmentally friendly activities and to gain knowledge they can share with their peers and parents.
Some of the activities the Environmental Youth Group will participate in will take them off Boys and Girls Club/QTT Community Center Campus. For students to participate in these activities, a release must be signed by their parent. Releases can be picked up at the tribe or downloaded on our website effective until rescinded in writing. Signed releases can be turned into the Tribal office anytime of the week between 8am-5pm.
EYG will have recycling contests four times a year. Dates of recycling contests are to be determined. All participants in EYG will be notified when the contest will take place. While the contest is on-going parents or children can bring in their recyclables to the QTT office.
A number of transpiring activities include; in/outdoor scavenger hunts, coloring/painting activities, trash for cash program, recycling contests, sand art, making slime and much more.
These recycling events will help encourage environmental awareness and behaviors on the importance on recycling reusable items and help keep them out of our community, landfill and oceans. Recycling these items will help keep our community litter free of these items. Everyone is a winner for participating in recycling. Following the recycling contests’, we will applaud them for taking environmental action a with ice-cream or pizza party.
I look forward to working with the youth of our community to help them better understand ways to live a more sustainable life and support a clean, healthy prosperous environment.

May 21st, 2021- EYG helped pick up trash around the community center building. They have picked up 6 bags of trash and had ice cream cones to follow for a job well done.
May 14, 2021- Will watch an environmental information video on youtube called "The Story of Stuff", and will discuss how we can do our part in helping the environment.

April 23, 2021- Finished painting the earth on they're paper mache globes.
April 21, 2021- Started on the first part of making Paper Mache Globes for display at the Earth Day Fair! EYG had blown up blue and green balloons and dipped newspaper in paper mache paste and waited for them to dry to paint the world on them.
April 16, 2021- Coloring pages for Earth Day Fair and discussing what and why Earth Day is so important.

June 22, 2012- This week in EYG, Cathy is planning to have the youth weed the garden if the weather is nice since no one showed up last week. If the weather isn't nice, the youth will be working on a board game they created and possibly do an experiment. Come down to the City Building and have some fun joining the Youth group.

June 1, 2012- This week in EYG we will be doing experiments to show the difference between Pleasantville and Pollutionville. A few of the experiments we have planned are colored celery, melted chalk, and leaf observation. Should be fun.
May 25, 2012 This week in EYG we are going to work on our garden box right outside the City Building. We are going to start weeding it so we can plant new plants in it. If your child has any gardening tools or gloves please send them with them, if not that's alright, we will be using our hands.
May 18, 2012 This week no one showed up for Environmental Youth Group. We want to work more on our Pleasantville vs Pollutionville segment. We tried to do a project on oil spills where we would take a cup of water and put vegetable oil on the top and dip a small washable object in it to show the youth that when oil is spilled into the water it can get on anything. Then we were going to take the object and wash it off with dish soap to show that the spill can be cleaned up but also that dish soap takes oil off of all living and non-living objects.
February 17, 2012 This week we started our Pleasantville vs. Pollutionville segment. We are teaching the students the difference of what our community would look like compared, dirty or clean. We are making dioramas, coloring pictures and going to do a before and after picture of an area in Sand Point, where we will emphasize the difference by picking up trash. This segment will last throughout a month
July 4, 2011 EYG will be meeting today at the Boys and Girls club. Scheduled activity for the day is to make whales out of paper bags. A big thank you goes out to Alaska Commercial which has generously donated the paper bags needed for this project.
June 23, 2011 Unfortunately, weather last week forced the EYG to meet inside. Hopefully the weather will cooperate this week as we are still hoping to bring the EYG on a hike. Permission slips are required to participate in this activity so make sure to get your in!
June 16, 2011 This week (June 16th) if the weather cooperates Lisa is planning on doing a walk about around town with the kids, and will be playing the alphabet game. All kids Kindergarten and up are encouraged to attend!
