Possible Solutions

During the second Healthy Community meeting, we asked participants to brainstorm possible solutions to help Sand Point move towards being a healthier community.  The list the group generated was extensive.

  • Contact our legislators
    • Communicate our crisis, our plan, and demonstrate our efforts
  • Bring in more people to the group
    • High School students, 20 and 30 year olds
  • Alternative Solutions (on front or back end of the law)
  • De-stigmatize behavioral
  • More support for individuals ages 25 - 45 who want to get away
  • Big Brother/Big Sister style program
  • Role Model Program
  • Peer Support for someone in recover
  • A person or place someone can go to Immediately when they want help
  • Someone who makes face to face contact with person who needs help
  • Drug presentation with the High School
  • Talking Circle with the High School
  • Provide Counseling to School
  • Talk to Kids about what they see as "reality" of drug or alcohol abuse
  • Educate youth on the actual effects of the drugs they are using or may use
  • More people teaching programs that teach respect
  • Drug education
  • More jobs brought to community
  • "Boring Time" aka family time together
  • Look closer at our children
  • Come up with activities calendar for mixing adult, children, elders, etc.
  • Place to go for adults, kids longer hours in the day with not so much distractions around
  • utilize UAF interior Aleutians campus for education
  • Guide young people to purchase some type of fishing permit (educate them about fisheries)
  • Incorporate classes to teach about taxes and budgeting education
  • Encourage family time (eat dinner together, talk to one another)
  • Provide a safe home for those who return from rehab.
