Alaska Natives Count, How to Answer the Census
The 2020 Census is more than a population count. It’s an opportunity to shape the future of the Alaska Native community.
If you’re Alaska Native, you can help Native communities and tribal programs statewide get their fair share of federal funding by following three easy steps.
STEP 1: ANSWER THE QUESTIONNAIRE
If you’re Alaska Native, but you don’t answer the census questionnaire, your community could lose almost $3,500 a year for tribal programs such as Head Start, SNAP, TANF, and WIC.
Alaska receives almost $3.5 billion dollars in federal funds annually based on U.S. Census data.
If a Native family of four isn’t counted, your community could lose about $14,000 a year.
STEP 2: LIST YOURSELF AS ‘PERSON 1’ ON QUESTION 5
If you’re Alaska Native, and you live in a mixed race household—whether you’re a spouse or significant other—please list yourself as ‘Person 1’ for question 5.
If ‘Person 1’ says he or she is ‘American Indian or Alaska Native,’ then the entire house will be counted as as a Native house.
‘Person 1’ doesn’t have to be male, own the home, or pay more than half of the household expenses.
STEP 3: WRITE-IN YOUR TRIBE ON QUESTION 9
If you’re Alaska Native, please list the name of your federally recognized tribe for question 9 (even if you live in Anchorage or elsewhere)
If you can’t remember the name for your tribe, write in the name of your village. You can even write in more than one tribe or village) if you associate with more than one.
