The City of Sand Point Crew Loading Scrap Metal
The City of Sand Point Crew Loading The Barge
Flurry of Activity in the Sand Point Boat Harbor
A few years ago the Popof Consortium, a group comprised of the three tribes in Sand Point, the Qagan Tayagungin Tribe, the Unga Tribe, and the Pauloff Harbor Tribe got together with the City of Sand Point to continue work on a project which started years before to rid Sand Point of scrap metal. The Qagan Tayagungin Tribe applied for a grant through the Environmental Protection Agency to bring a barge into Sand Point to pick up the scrap metal collected and ship it to a recycling facility.
This has been a long project which took a lot of effort from all of those involved. The Unga tribe provided labor to collect scrap metal identified around Sand Point for recycling. The City of Sand Point provided labor, equipment, and space necessary to store the scrap metal until the barge arrived to pick it up. The Qagan Tayagungin Tribe has provided logistics and has worked with the recycling facility and barge company to get the barge in Sand Point to pick up the scrap metal to transport it to the recycling facility.
This project has taken a few years to complete, and we're thrilled to see it finally coming together and the nearly 500 tons of scrap metal finally being loaded onto the barge to be taken away for recycling. Thank you to all of those involved, and please, while these crews are busy at work trying to safely load all the scrap metal onto the barge, be sure to give them plenty of room to do their job. The end result is 500 tons of scrap metal off our island, leaving our home a cleaner, and prettier place.
